25-year-old charged for hack try on Facebook

A 25-year-old man has been charged in the United Kingdom for attempting to hack into social networking giant Facebook's security systems. UK's The Guardian reported that Glenn Mangham has been released on conditional bail after appearing at Westminster magistrates court Wednesday. However, the report said the alleged hack try is not believed to be connected to the attacks by hacktivist group Anonymous and Lulz Security, the report said. Mangham was also ordered not to access the Internet as part of strict bail conditions before a committal hearing on September 28, the report said. The Met Police had arrested him at his home in York last June 2. Mangham was accused of conducting the attack April 17 and May 9 by:

  • downloading a computer program "to secure unauthorized access" to Facebook;
  • attempting to hack into Facebook's "Mailman" server;
  • using PHP script to secure access to another Facebook server dubbed "Phabricator";
  • sharing a PHP script intended to hack into that Facebook server; and
  • securing "repeated" access to another Facebook server. But the report also said the information commissioner's office, which investigates potential data breaches, said Facebook had not reported any incident over this period. However, the report quoted a spokeswoman for Facebook as saying Facebook had been working with Scotland Yard and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. "While no user data was compromised, we have been working with Scotland Yard and the FBI as we take any attempt to hack our internal systems extremely seriously," she said. — RSJ, GMA News
