Ex-broadcaster killed in Negros Occ. ambush

A former media practitioner was killed in an ambush in Negros Occidental province on Monday afternoon, the spokesman for the Philippine National Police said. Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. identified the victim as 42-year-old Niel "Lito" Jimena. Other than describing him as a "former broadcaster," Cruz gave no further details as to which media company Jimena used to work for. Cruz said the shooting incident happened at Jacienda Teresa in E.B. Magalona town at about 5:50 p.m. Monday. An initial investigation showed Jimena was on his way home when two unidentified armed men riding a motorcycle in tandem attacked him. An earlier report by radio dzBB's Iloilo affiliate said Jimena sustained three gunshot wounds from a cal-.45 pistol in the back, and two more on the side. As of posting, authorities are still continuing with the investigation, Cruz said. Jimena is the fourth journalist killed so far this year. The Committee to Protect Journalists had listed at least three Filipino journalists killed in 2011, including:

  • Gerardo Ortega of RMN Palawan, January 24,
  • Maria Len Flores Somera of dzME, shot in Malabon March 24, and
  • Romeo Olea of dwEB in Iriga City, June 13. Journalists killed since 1986 According to Rowena Paraan of the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP), a total of 145 journalists have been killed since democracy was won back in 1986. Of the total number, 104 were killed during the Arroyo administration. The figure does not include the case of Jimena. Media watchdog Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, meanwhile, has a lower figure — 121 journalists killed since 1986. — RSJ, GMA News
