Pinoy boxer joins Mexican reality show

In a country wary of Filipino "Mexicutioners," Filipino boxer Narciso Morales Jr. is taking part in a boxing reality show in Mexico. Morales is one of the 16 challengers in the Super Bantamweight — 122 pounds (lbs) — division of the reality show "Reto de Campeones" (Challenge of the Champions) of the World Boxing Council (WBC). The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the reality show, with a $100,000 prize offer, will start on August 27 and air for six weeks. The show follows a direct elimination policy. The DFA said Morales will fight on August 27 against one of the Mexican boxers. Other contenders in the show are from the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia, Thailand, United States, Panama, and Mexico. "Seven boxers come from Mexico and the rest of the countries have one representative each," the DFA noted. "Morales is 23 years old. He was born in Cebu but lives in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines," the DFA said in a news release. Fil-Am fitness trainer The DFA said the fitness trainer of the boxers, Fitzgerald Tuazon, is a Filipino-American from Davao. Philippine Chargé d' Affaires Lilybeth Deapera and Cultural Officer Amelyn Obong attended the press conference of the reality show last August 11, the DFA said. Fighting against Mexicans Mapi Entertainment Director General Pilar Montero, a boxing aficionado, said the reality show was put up because they want a big boxing event to be held in Mexico. According to her, "there is no successful boxer that has not fought against a Mexican." Many Filipino boxers - including Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao -- have earned a reputation as "Mexicutioners," for their victories over Mexican foes. - VVP, GMA News
