HK exchange hacking suspect released on bail

A businessman appeared before a Hong Kong court Wednesday for cyber attacks against the Hong Kong Stock Exchange earlier this month. The trader, identified as Tse Man-lai, 28, appeared in Tuen Mun court for allegedly attacking the HKEx's disclosure website last Aug. 10. He was charged for using software designed for hacking, according to a report on Radio Television Hong Kong. But no plea was taken, and the magistrate adjourned the case until November 16 to allow time for further investigations, the RTHK report said. He was released on HK$20,000 bail, RTHK added. Tse was accused of accessing computers with dishonest or criminal intent, the report added. On the day of the attack, trading in seven companies had to be suspended. They included HSBC, Cathay Pacific and the exchange itself. Prosecutors claimed authorities seized a dozen computers from Tse's Tin Shui Wai home and his office. One of the computers contained records of hacking activities against the Stock Exchange on August 12 and 13, a few days after the website crashed. Also, the court was told Tse was found to have taught others how to use hacking software on his personal blog. — TJD, GMA News
