‘Mina’ death toll now 17, damage breaches P1B mark


The death toll from tropical cyclone "Mina" (Nanmadol) rose to 17 Monday afternoon, with the latest fatalities from Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Benito Ramos said the latest fatality was a village councilor who drowned while helping residents in Ilocos Norte. “Umakyat sa 17 ang patay natin ngayon. Ang latest ang isang barangay kagawad sa Brgy. Sta. Maria ng Piddig, Ilocos Norte, habang tinutulong ang kabaryo, siya nalunod ngayon," he said in an interview on dzRH radio. Earlier, the NDRRMC’s 1 p.m. update had placed the death toll at 16, adding the damage to property breached the P1-billion mark. According to the NDRRMC, the latest fatalities were identified as:

  • Andres Calaro, 82, Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, drowned; previously reported missing
  • Romeo Ping-ilin, Mt. Province, drowned
  • Rustom Paul Joaquin, Quirino, Ilocos Sur, drowned
  • Mark Lester Agdeppa, 3, Sinait, Ilocos Sur, slipped in a drainage canal and drowned At least 21 were injured while eight remained missing. The NDRRMC also said "Mina" caused P1,009,953,299.54 in damage including P986,753,299.54 in agriculture and P23.2 million in infrastructure. Also, it said "Mina" affected 56,167 families or 231,314 people in 653 villages in 91 towns and six cities in 15 provinces. Of these, 1,215 families or 5,369 people are being served in 38 evacuation centers. At least 45 houses were destroyed and 755 others damaged. In Ilocos, water supply was still interrupted as of posting time, but power, communication, telephone lines and transportation lines were already operational. — KBK, GMA News
