Digitimes: iPhone 5 to 'look larger'

No, Apple Inc.'s highly anticipated next-generation iPhone 5 will not have a panel bigger than four inches, though the design will make the screen seem bigger. And yes, the next iPhone's back will have a metal instead of reinforced-glass chassis. This was the gist of further details about the upcoming iPhone 5 from Taiwan-based DigiTimes, which cited sources from upstream panel suppliers for the iPhone. "Despite rumors about iPhone 5 featuring a 4.2-inch panel circulating within the IT market for a while, following a leak from Apple's website in Switzerland in early August, sources from upstream panel suppliers have recently revealed that the iPhone 5's panel size will still be less than (four inches)," it said. But the sources added the iPhone 5 will get a 3.5- to 3.7-inch panel with a design to allow the bezel of the panel to become thinner and make the screen look larger. It added the iPhone 5's back design will be changed to a metal chassis instead of reinforced-glasses. DigiTimes said the other "rumored specifications" of iPhone 5 include:

  • a 4- to 4.2-inch HD touch panel
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • Full HD video recording
  • A5 dual-core processor
  • new ultra-thin industrial design.
But DigiTimes also said its sources believe the leaked specifications are more of market expectations for iPhone 5. It added the sources claimed the iPhone 5 will not have many differences compared to iPhone 4 in terms of components and the panel will still be less than four inches. A separate article on tech site TheNextWeb said the inclusion of a metal back will divide opinion, amid suggestions that Apple had used glass designs to boost the device’s signal strength. It noted Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 5 and a low-cost upgraded iPhone 4 model (iPhone 4S) in the coming weeks. — TJD, GMA News
