Violence mars QC demolition; traffic snarled on Commonwealth Ave.

Early rush-hour traffic along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City was snarled Wednesday as violence marred the demolition at a residential area in Old Balara. Anti-riot police escorting a demolition team clashed with residents who hurled rocks and hard objects at them, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported. Only two lanes of a portion of the eastbound (Fairview-bound) part of Commonwealth Avenue were passable to traffic during the confrontation, the report said. Residents set up barricades near their houses but the police started to push those barricades away. Police held some of the residents involved in the violence, even as the demolition team made its way to the area in Old Balara. The report said the tension started past 8 a.m. when the demolition team arrived, with teams from the city police and fire department as backups. Aside from the anti-riot police, teams from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and bomb squad units backed the demolition team. Firefighters were also on standby at the area, the report said. — LBG, GMA News
