US Embassy in Manila closed on Sept. 5

The United States Embassy in Manila will be closed on September 5, Monday, in observance of Labor Day in the US. In an announcement on its Facebook page, the US Embassy said it will resume normal office hours on Tuesday, September 6. "The U.S. Embassy will be closed on Monday, September 5, 2011 in observance of the U.S. Holiday, Labor Day. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, September. 6, 2011," it said. Labor Day in the US was first observed on Sept. 5, 1882, by the Central Labor Union of New York. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when then-President Grover Cleveland made reconciliation with the labor movement a top political priority. Many Americans also consider Labor Day the symbolic end of the summer. — RSJ, GMA News
