NDRRMC: 'Mina' death toll goes up to 29; damage up to P1.4B


The death toll from tropical cyclone Mina (Nanmadol) rose to 29 early Thursday, with the latest fatalities from La Union and Abra provinces. In its 6 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also said the estimated damage to property rose to P1.409 billion. Among the latest fatalities were:

  • Reydan Solina, 25, Sudipen, La Union, who suffocated due to a landslide
  • Marilyn Binay-an, 45, Philex Mines, Tuba, Benguet, hit by an uprooted pine tree
  • Roberto Agaming, 62, San Ramon, Manabo, Abra, who drowned. He was previously reported missing. At least 37 were reported injured while at least five remained missing, the NDRRMC said. The NDRRMC said Mina had affected at least 84,114 families or 348,473 people in 930 villages in 110 towns and eight cities in 17 provinces. Of these, 725 families or 3,169 people are being served in 18 evacuation centers. Some 103 houses were destroyed while 1,310 were damaged. Damage to property was estimated at P1,409,464,973.39, including P187,573,577 in infrastructure and P1,221,891,396.39 in agriculture. Price monitoring Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry activated provincial monitoring teams to monitor prices of prime commodities in affected areas. The NDRRMC said that in La Union and Pangasinan, the increase of prices ranged from 1 to 9 percent. In Pangasinan, commodities like milk, coffee and construction materials (GI sheets, nails and electrical accessories) increased while those of flour, canned goods and cement decreased. Roads, bridges, dams As of 6 a.m. Thursday, six bridges and 19 road sections remained closed to traffic due to landslides, scoured slope protection, eroded shoulders, and floods. As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, the water level at La Mesa Dam was at 80.03 meters. "The water from La Mesa Dam is likely to affect the low-lying areas along the Tulyahan River from Fairview Forest Hill, Quirino Highway, Capri Goodwill, Sta. Quiteria and San Bartolome in Quezon City; Brgy Ligon, North Expressway in Valenzuela and Malabon. All the residents living in the aforementioned areas are advised to be alert for possible increase in the water level downstreams," the NDRRMC said. — RSJ, GMA News
