'Mina' death toll rises to 33; Benguet, Baguio under state of calamity


The death toll from tropical cyclone Mina (Nanmadol) has risen to 33 Friday morning, with the latest fatalities from Ilocos Sur, Zambales and Bulacan. In its 6 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also said eight are still missing, including two each from Nueva Ecija and Abra. Mina had battered northern Luzon last weekend while enhancing the southwest monsoon that dumped rains on several parts of the country. As of Friday, Benguet province and Baguio City were placed under a state of calamity. Ilocos Sur was similarly placed under a state of calamity earlier. The NDRRMC indicated two of the latest fatalities were siblings who died in a flash flood in Bulacan. It identified the latest fatalities as:

  • Jenelyn Tolentino, 14, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur (drowned)
  • Efren Dolandolan, 50, Sta. Cruz, Zambales (drowned)
  • Bonifacio Minguita Jr., 3, Brgy. Citrus, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan (flash flood)
  • Quintina Mae Minguita, 5, Brgy. Citrus, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan (flash flood) Among the most recently reported missing were:
  • Denmark Ocuman, 20, Brgy. 4, Laur, Nueva Ecija (drowned Aug. 30)
  • Daniel Atendido, 40, Brgy. San Jose Sur, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija (drowned Aug. 28) Also as of Friday, the NDRRMC said Mina had affected 86,359 families or 359,631 people in 1,005 villages in 118 towns and eight cities in 17 provinces. Of these, 735 families or 3,186 people are still being served in 17 evacuation centers. A total of 109 houses were destroyed while 1,644 were damaged. The estimated damage to property stood at P1,432,969,473.39; including P210,976,577 in infrastructure and P1,221,992,896.39 in agriculture. Roads, bridges As of 6 a.m. Friday, six bridges and 19 road sections remained closed to traffic due to landslides, scoured slope protections, eroded shoulders, and floods. Meanwhile in Cagayan Valley, many evacuees in Lallo, Buguey, Sta. Ana and Gonzaga towns were found suffering from cough and colds, fever and diarrhea.
