Indonesian educator trains students to help communities

This year, six awardees from different parts of Asia take center stage in the annual Ramon Magsaysay Awards, the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize, to serve as models of leadership and service. In this series, GMA News Online asks each awardee: What can the Philippines learn from your story? Why should a student go to school? The practical reason, for most Filipinos, is to get employed. As a result, many booming industries such as call centers are collaborating with schools to ensure that their graduates’ skills are aligned with the needs of businesses.

For Indonesian educator Hasainin Juaini, however, going to school should go beyond a student’s personal concerns. It should also address the community’s needs. In the peripheral region of West Lombok in Indonesia, Hasanain established a special, community-based pesantren or Islamic boarding school. But unlike similar schools that are viewed as “ivory towers" isolated from society, the Nurul Haramain Putri Narmada established by Hasanain uses an integrated approach that “gets students and teachers involved in issues of environmental quality, livelihood enhancement, and good governance." (Read his story in the document below) “It's a boarding school based on the needs of the community, not based on the needs of the government," Hasanain explains in an interview with GMA News Online. “This pesantren must always be connected with the people, with the community. It means that after teaching the students some values, we bring the students to make many activities with the community," says Hasanain. The Magsaysay awardee says his pesantren’s philosophy applies not only to Islamic schools but also to Christian and even secular schools. It can also extend to other countries in Asia and the world, Hasanain says. “Don’t separate yourself from the community," he advises schools in the Philippines and other parts of the world.
