Star Wars fans not happy over Lucas' Blu-ray 'updates'

Many fans of the "Star Wars" science-fiction trilogy are outraged over an alteration made to the upcoming Blu-ray home video release of the popular film series. One crucial change involved a climactic scene from "Return of the Jedi," where Darth Vader now shouts "No!" while hurling the evil Emperor to his death. Some fans were so outraged they have canceled their preorders for the $89.99 Blu-Ray release on Amazon. A blog entry on The New York Times said a representative for LucasFilm confirmed the change in an email: "Yes - Darth says NO." Previous versions of "Return of the Jedi" had shown Vader hurling the Emperor in silence, it noted. "Though it may sound like a minor detail among the millions in the 'Star Wars' movies, this alteration has not sat well with many admirers of the film franchise," the New York Times blog said. It said the angered fans included Simon Pegg of “Shaun of the Dead." "Always loved Vader's wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin's ghost. What a f***ing shame," Pegg said in his Twitter account. On the other hand, other "Star Wars" fans are getting their message across by canceling their orders on Amazon.com. "Once again Darth Lucas is changing his movies to 'improve' them. Well Vader screaming NOOOOOO is just terrible and what is even worst is Obiwan's Krayt Dragon cry to scare off the Sand People sounds like a sound bit from Family Guy! Do yourselves a favor and cancel. Don't fall to the darkside," said J. Curran. Another fan, N. Lucius, said the latest scene changes "are the final proof that George Lucas has lost his mind." But another fan, Bob Smith, countered that if purists preferred the originals in their "original" state, "then you prefer their 'original and poorer' quality. And if that's the case, why do you need these on bluray? They already exist on DVD, so just get those *and* save yourself some cash." — TJD, GMA News
