13 rescued from stranded vessel off Batangas

At least 13 passengers were rescued over the weekend from a Manila-bound sea vessel that encountered engine problems and was stranded for several hours off Batangas province. The Philippine Coast Guard said Sunday the MV San Carlo Uno encountered engine trouble at 9:40 a.m. Saturday, seven nautical miles southwest of Fortune Island in Batangas. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Algier Ricafrente said the vessel was carrying 14 passengers, two of whom had medical conditions, and 12 crewmembers. But only 13 of the 14 passengers were brought to Manila. One of the passengers stayed behind along with the 12 crewmembers, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard identified the 13 passengers as:

  • Luciano Lacaran, 40
  • Johnmar Tulaylay, 18
  • Marlon Tulaylay, 22
  • Yolanda Masangkay, 47
  • Allan Rosales, 20
  • Enrico Verdera, 58
  • Joselyn Verdera, 55
  • Joseph Ryan Sapatya, 32
  • Juvy Quinones, 38
  • Moly Madula, 62
  • Jorge Perez Jr., 35
  • Danilo Barleta, 48
  • Enrique Villas, 49 Verdera had suffered a mild stroke, while Masangkay has diabetes, the Coast Guard noted. After getting medical assistance, the 13 passengers were properly turned-over to Roderick Aurelio, the owner of MV San Carlo Uno, who then assisted them in their transportation to their respective destinations. The Coast Guard said the crippled MV San Carlo Uno was to be towed to Manila. Investigation showed the vessel, owned and operated by Aurelio Shipping Corp., departed Tilik, Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro at around 8:05 a.m. and headed for Del Pan in Manila. According to the Coast Guard, the vessel’s captain, Danilo Jara, reported the incident to the Coast Guard detachment in Tilik at around 12:50 p.m. Saturday. The Tilik detachment then relayed the information to the Coast Guard Detachment in Nasugbu and Bataan, which then alerted the Coast Guard Action Center. The Coast Guard sent the BRP Nueva Viscaya (SARV-3502) to the area to provide necessary assistance. - KBK, GMA News
