Weather: SLPA nears Visayas, PAGASA says

A shallow low-pressure area (SLPA) spotted off northeastern Luzon Sunday morning moved toward the Visayas Sunday afternoon, state weather forecasters said. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the SLPA was estimated at 520 east of the Visayas as of 2 p.m. "Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. Northern Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms," PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. bulletin. PAGASA also said light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest to west will prevail over the country. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate, it added. On the other hand, PAGASA did not say if the SLPA may intensify into a cyclone. If it does, it will be locally codenamed "Nonoy." Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said the SLPA has a small chance of becoming a cyclone. Aurelio also said their data at the time indicated the SLPA would move away from the Philippines and eventually weaken and dissolve. - KBK, GMA News
