Google Doodle pays tribute to Queen's Freddie Mercury

Search giant Google on Monday paid tribute to the "late great" British musician Freddie Mercury with an animated Google Doodle featuring his greatest hits. Visitors to Google's homepage on Monday found a video that when clicked would play a flashback of his career and performing style. Many of the animated songs would feature a Google logo in the background. When clicked again or when the brief animation ends, the visitor would be taken to a search results page on Mercury. Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on Sept. 5, 1946. He was a musician, singer and songwriter, and was best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Queen. He was remembered for his flamboyant stage persona and powerful vocals, and composed hits like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Killer Queen," "Somebody to Love," "Don't Stop Me Now," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "We Are the Champions." He died Nov. 24, 1991 due to bronchopneumonia brought on by Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a day after publicly acknowledging he had the disease. Mercury, born and raised in Zanzibar, was called "Britain's first Asian rock star" and was named by Time Asia as one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years. — RSJ, GMA News
