Customs seizes 6 luxury cars in Manila

Six luxury vehicles worth P35 million were seized by the Bureau of Customs on Monday morning at the Manila International Container Port (MICP). The six — a 2007 Hummer H2, a black 2007 Lincoln Navigator, a blue 2008 Cadillac Escalade, and three 2007 Cadillac Escalades — were shipped from New York, Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez said. Alvarez said the vehicles were stacked in three forty-footer containers vans consigned to a Tambo, Parañaque City-based company. Enforcement Service Director Horacio Suansing Jr. said the shipment was put on alert based on derogatory information that the containers contained used motor vehicles, the importation of which is illegal in the country. Importation of all types of used motor vehicles is prohibited in the Philippines except those owned and for the personal use of returning residents or immigrants, or for the use of an official of the Diplomatic Corps and authorized to be imported by the Department of Foreign Affairs. According to MICP district collector Ricardo Belmonte, the cars will be auctioned off as they are considered forfeited in favor of the government. Alvarez ordered all previous importations of the consignee be subjected to post-entry audit to determine if the company had used the same modus operandi in the past. - KBK, GMA News
