Ralf Souquet beats Dennis Orcullo, wins World Pool Masters title

German Ralf Souquet put together a big comeback, winning the final five racks to beat Filipino Dennis Orcullo to capture the 2011 World Pool Masters Monday night at The Block at SM North EDSA in Quezon City. Souquet claimed the World Pool Masters title for the sixth time as he came storming back from a 5-3 deficit to beat Orcullo halting the Filipino’s bid for a historic crown. Orcullo was on the verge of winning his second straight crown—a first in the 17-year history of the tournament—but Souquet got his deadly form in time to win the crown. Souquet took home $20,000 to grab his first-ever crown in the Philippines. “The Philippines is the country of pool and it's where the sport is such a big thing. It's just so tough to win a tournament here," said Souquet in a Matchroom Sport interview posted in its website. Orcullo took a 5-3 lead when he cleaned the rack but left the two-ball open on a safety attempt on the following rack paving the way for Souquet to score. Souquet tied the match when Orcullo missed on a jump shot at the three-ball before taking the next rack and never relinquished the lead to take the crown. Orcullo, who settled for $10,000, could have taken a much larger lead but a series of missed shots, dry and illegal breaks early in the match may have cost him the title. Orcullo had two illegal breaks in the first six racks to allow Souquet to tie the game at 3-3. Orcullo reached the final after defeating Fu Jian Bo of China, 8-5, Monday afternoon while Souquet had to earn a finals seat when he beat Darren Appleton of England, 8-7. Orcullo dominated Chang Jung Lin of Chinese Taipei, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and beat Tony Drago of Malta, 8-2, in round one. The first round match of Souquet, meanwhile, reached hill-hill before disposing Mika Immonen of Finland, 8-7, before beating Lee Van Corteza of the Philippines, 8-6, in the quarters. --OMG, GMA News
