Chicken sold in supermarkets safe, industry group assures public

Amid fears in connection with the H5N1 avian flu virus, supermarket owners reassured consumers that chickens sold in their establishments are safe to eat. The Philippine Association of Supermarkets Inc. said the chickens it sells are homegrown and do not have the H5N1 virus, radio dzBB reported Tuesday. PASI head Federico Ples also said the chickens sold in PASI member supermarkets undergo strict quality control, the report added. The Philippines enjoys the distinction of being a bird flu-free country at this time. Meanwhile, prices of chicken in markets remained stable at about P120 per kilo as of Tuesday, according to a report on dzBB. Last weekend, Malacañang assured the public all steps are being taken to prevent carriers of the H5N1 virus from entering the Philippines. — RSJ, GMA News
