Enrile, Pia Cayetano clash during RH debate

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Sen. Pia Cayateno on Tuesday clashed while debating on the controversial reproductive health (RH) bill. Enrile, who has openly announced his objection to the passage of the RH bill, enumerated the different contraceptives and asked Senate Bill No. 2865 or The Reproductive Health Act of 2011's co-sponsor Cayetano to confirm whether they cured diseases or just prevented pregnancy. "(Contraceptives) prevent pregnancy... but pregnancy is not a disease," Enrile said, to which Cayetano countered: "Of course not." "Are condoms curative? They do not cure anything," Enrile said. "No. Not to my knowledge," answered Cayetano. "(But) they can prevent something," said Enrile. "Definitely," Cayetano replied. But when Enrile went on to enumerate more contraceptives, Cayetano said she has already mentioned that some devices were really made to be preventive rather than curative. Cayetano's remark apparently did not sit well with the Senate President. "Please don't teach me how to intepellate," he said. Cayetano, however, said that she was not trying to teach Enrile anything. "I'm going over these things one by one to put them into the record," she said. Shortly after, Cayetano snapped back at Enrile, saying: "And Mr. President may I also ask you not to teach me how to answer? I am simply responding to the question. I repeated my answer a couple of times, they are not curative, they are preventive." Enrile just thanked her and proceeded to ask more questions regarding contraceptive devices. — RSJ, GMA News
