Pacquiao says he can't run for VP in 2016 due to age concern

Contrary to what he announced earlier, Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao on Saturday said he will not be running for vice-president in the 2016. A report on GMA News Live said Manny clarified that he cannot run for the second highest post of the land because of age qualification. In a chance interview upon his arrival before dawn Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pacquiao also said "tatakbo tayo pagka-gobernador sa 2013. Pero sa ngayon boxing muna." Manny arrived from Mexico where they staged the last leg of the world press tour with opponent Juan Manuel Marquez for their November 12 fight. While in Mexico, Pacquiao said, "Come 2016 I am going to run (for) vice president... No more boxing at that time." But Commission on Elections chief Sixto Brillantes on Friday said Manny is not qualified to run for vice-president come 2016 because he will only be 37 years old by then. Brillantes cited provisions in the 1987 Constitution stating that a candidate must at least be 40 years old on election day before he or she can run for Vice-President. Pacquiao was born on December 17, 1978. — LBG, GMA News
