3 killed in predawn road accident in Pasig City

At least three people were reported killed in a road smashup involving a private vehicle and a passenger jeep in Pasig City before dawn Sunday. Police are verifying witnesses' testimonies both vehicles were speeding and heading for Cubao, Quezon City, when the incident occurred, radio dzBB's Rodil Vega reported. An initial report said that collision occurred at the Ugong Norte area in Pasig City, near Quezon City's boundary. Predawn traffic along E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue (Libis-bound) had slowed down due to the collision as only two lanes were left open to traffic before 6 a.m. Two of the fatalities – initially identified as Anton and Atong – were from the Honda vehicle, which a tweet from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said was a CR-V. The third fatality, a passenger of the jeep, was initially identified as Brian Deano. Deano was a chemical engineering student who was on his way to Cubao to fetch his mother who arrived from Camarines Norte in Bicol, the report said. "Ako galing Camarines Norte, kadarating ko lang, susundin ako sa Cubao (sana ng anak ko)," said his mother Nemesia, who rushed to the site after learning of the incident. The dzBB report quoted Brian's sister Judy as saying the jeep was speeding when she heard a loud "kalabog" (noise). An investigation showed that after colliding with the sport utility vehicle (SUV), the jeep then hit a lamppost and flipped over and dropped on its side. The SUV's front part was smashed. A separate report by dzBB's Glen Juego said investigators are verifying information that the jeep suddenly stopped to unload a passenger when the SUV hit it from behind. The SUV's brakes supposedly failed. Truck snarls traffic at Magallanes flyover Meanwhile, the MMDA said an accident involving a mixer truck forced the brief closure of some lanes at the EDSA-Magallanes Flyover (Buendia-bound). The MMDA said the truck hit the railing of the flyover and spilled mixed cement on the road. No one was reported injured in the incident. — MRT, GMA News
