1 killed as suspected NPA rebs attack Samar police station

(Updated 1:20 p.m.) An undetermined number of suspected communist rebels attacked on early Monday a municipal police station in Samar, police reports said. The police report said no casualties were reported in the the attack on the Hinabangan police station at about 5 a.m., but according to a report by radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag, one person was killed while a policeman was wounded. The radio report said the fatality, initially identified as Mariano Abarcoza, was a former member of the Integrated National Police who joined the New People's Army (NPA) rebels after going absent without leave. The wounded policeman, on the other hand, was identified as PO1 Allan Pagampang, who was hit in the hand. The latest rebel attack came even as the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines have agreed to resume formal talks next month. Stalled in August 2004, the talks are expected to take place in Oslo, Norway. Last month, suspected New People's Army rebels also attacked two police stations in Mindanao. Likewise, insurgents in southern Philippines are still holding the municipal mayor of Lingig town in Surigao del Sur as well as four government jail personnel in Bukidnon. The hostages have since been declared prisoners of war and offered freedom in exchange for the release of jailed NPA and Communist Party leaders. The government, however, has refused the demand. — RSJ/KBK, GMA News
