Shamcey Supsup places 4th in Miss Universe pageant


UPDATED 1:00 p.m. - Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup was the third runner-up in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Supsup ranked a place higher than her predecessor, Venus Raj, who was fourth runner-up in the 2010 pageant. Leila Lopes of Angola was crowned the 60th Miss Universe, making her the first titleholder from her country. Aside from Supsup, the others who are part of Lopes' entourage are:
  • Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko (1st runner-up);
  • Miss Brazil Priscila Machado (2nd runner-up); and
  • Miss China Luo Zilin (4th runner up). Filipino singer-actress and Tony award winner Lea Salonga was one of the nine telecast judges in this year's pageant. Salonga was the judge drawn by Miss Angola to ask her the question in the final category of the pageant. Aside from Salonga, the other telecast judges were Helio Castroneves, Connie Chung, Isabeli Fontana, Vivica A. Fox, Adrienne Maloof-Nassif, Farouk Shami, Italo Zanzi, and Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega. Contestants from 89 countries and territories participated in this year's pageant, surpassing the previous record of 86 contestants in 2006. Fox asked Supsup, "Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love? Why or why not?" Supsup answered, "If I have to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love. Because the first person that I love is God, who created me." "I have my faith and my principles, and this is what makes me who I am. If the person loves me, he'll love my God, too," she added. Supsup was the only one among the top 5 contestants who answered the judge's question in English. The other gave their replies in the own languages and were aided by an interpreter. Supsup was also a consistent fan favorite during the pageant, where online fan votes were given weight in the competition for the first time. The Filipina beauty was the online voters' question-and-answer favorite with 7.5. She ranked second in the swimsuit and evening gown votes. Shamcey Supsup Shamcey Gurrea Supsup was born on May 16, 1986 in General Santos City. Supsup graduated from the University of the Philippines-Diliman as magna cum laude with a degree in architecture. She also topped the Architecture Licensure Examination in July last year. - GMA News
