Mar to VP Binay: Good luck on 2016 presidential bid

Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel “Mar" Roxas II on Wednesday wished Vice President Jejomar Binay luck on the latter’s plan to run for president in 2016. “Congratulations at good luck sa kanya," he said at the sidelines of the proposed 2012 budget for his department at the House of Representatives. He said he only learned that Binay was eyeing the presidency from the media. Roxas, who lost his vice-presidential bid to Binay last year, refused to comment further on the matter, saying he is focused on his current job. "Nandito ako para isulong ang programa sa ligtas, abot kaya at reliable na transportasyon sa ating mga kababayan… Trains, boats and planes ang konsentrasyon ko sa ngayon," he said. Binay made public on Tuesday his intention to run as president in 2016, saying it has been his dream ever since he entered politics. Nothing wrong Members of the opposition at the House of Representatives, meanwhile, said they see nothing wrong with the vice president’s move to announce his plans for 2016. Deputy Minority Leader Danilo Suarez said it was understandable why Binay wants to run for president in the next national elections. “I don’t see anything unethical or immoral in making your intentions clear. May age factor din kasi ang pagtakbo bilang presidente, and he [Binay] will be overaged for the position if he will do it in 2022," he said at a press briefing. House Minority Leader Edcel Lagman, however, said Binay should be ready to face the “risks" that may arise from his early announcement. “All his activities will now be watched by his political opponents. That’s the risk you take by expressing your intention early on," he said. — KBK, GMA News
