Wife shoots husband in QC mall; guard killed

(Updated 1:50 p.m.) A security guard died after being accidentally shot while trying to prevent a woman from shooting herself, moments after she shot her husband inside a mall in Quezon City Wednesday night. Guard Ricardo Inamac III, who was assigned to SM North EDSA, succumbed to his wounds at the Quezon City General Hospital (QCGH), radio dzBB reported before dawn Thursday. The woman, Sheila Macapugay, is now detained at the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 2 after the shooting. On Wednesday night, Macapugay had gone to the mall's basement where her husband worked, and shot him. She was about to shoot herself when Inamac tried to intervene. As they grappled for the firearm, it went off and hit Inamac in the body. A separate report on the late night newscast Saksi said Sheila went to the mall talked to her husband about "sustento" (financial support). The two talked and she left, but she returned after a few hours, and shot her husband, who was rushed to the hospital. "Tinutok niya baril sa ulo, inawat siya ng gwardya kaya pati ang gwardya nabaril niya (She was pointing the gun at herself and the guard intervened. The guard was shot in the scuffle)," said QCPD Station 2 commander Superintendent Audie Madrideo. In a later report on dzBB, Madrideo was quoted as saying Sheila's husband, Adel, died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday at the QCGH. He said Sheila now faces homicide charges and has been turned over to the Quezon City Police District-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit. Madrideo said Mrs. Macapugay has been informed of her husband's death. The police are now working on the possibility of having a psychologist counsel her, he said. On the other hand, Madrideo also hinted Mrs. Macapugay faces charges of illegal possession of firearms. "Ginamit niyang baril ay cal-.38, na nabili in Sta. Rita, Bulacan. We suppose hindi ito lisensyado," he said. An initial investigation showed the suspect managed to get the gun past mall security by hiding the firearm in the lining of her bag. "Sa visual search di makikita ang baril kasi nasa ilalim ng bag (pero) kung may metal detector siguro [baka nakita yun]," he said. He said the police are now coordinating with mall management on beefing up security measures.
