DFA: Aquino to deliver anti-corruption lecture in US visit
Aside from promoting the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III will deliver a lecture on how to fight corruption in government and on people empowerment during his visit to the United States. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Aquino's public lecture will be held at the International Monetary Fund-World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington D.C. "[The] lecture will center on the theme of citizen empowerment, good governance and fighting corruption as agents of poverty reduction before an audience composed of finance ministers, central bankers and country representatives," the DFA said in a news release. It added World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick had invited Aquino to deliver the lecture. Aquino had run in the 2010 elections on a platform of anti-graft and good governance. His late parents, former Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino, are remembered for inspiring a "People Power" revolt that ousted then President Ferdinand Marcos. The lecture is one of the several activities in Aquino's official visit to New York and Washington from Sept. 18 to 23. "The visit aims to enhance the country's strategic profile by underscoring the Aquino government's demonstrated commitment to its good governance and anti-corruption agenda, and to increase awareness about the government's domestic and foreign policy thrusts," the DFA said. It added the visit also looks to highlight the administration's economic agenda and accomplishments after a year in office, meet with present and potential US investors and apprise the Filipino community about the Aquino administration's accomplishments and share the latest developments in the country. Aquino was also invited by US President Barack Obama and Brazilian leader Dilma Rousseff to the official launch of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in New York on September 20. The OGP is a new multilateral initiative to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance. Obama and Rousseff are the co-chairs of the initiative. The Philippines is one of the eight countries, and one of only two from Asia, which are members of the Steering Committee of OGP. The other seven countries are: the US, Brazil, UK, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway and South Africa. The Steering Committee members were selected based on:
- Fiscal Transparency
- Access to Information
- Disclosures Related to Elected Officials
- Citizen Engagement.
