MMDA: Number coding lifted Monday except in Makati, Las Piñas

In anticipation of Monday’s transport strike by militant transport groups, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority will lift the number coding scheme on Monday except in Makati and Las Piñas cities. The MMDA said the “Number Coding will be lifted on Monday, September 19, due to scheduled transport strike led by the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON)." But it stressed the number coding will remain in effect in Makati and Las Piñas Cities. Under the number coding scheme, vehicles with plate numbers ending in 1 and 2 will not be allowed on major thoroughfares in Metro Manila on Monday. Earlier, PISTON said it was pushing through with a transport strike to protest continued high fuel prices. Several government agencies, including the MMDA, met Friday to coordinate their actions to ease the impact of the strike on commuters. MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino warned drivers and operators who resort to violence and intimidation that they will be dealt with accordingly. — LBG, GMA News
