PAGASA: 'Onyok' threatens parts of Luzon

As it continued to linger near the boundary of the Philippine area of responsibility, tropical storm "Onyok" (Roke) is threatening parts of Luzon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Onyok and the monsoon trough may trigger flash floods and landslides in parts of Luzon. "It (Onyok) is forecast to remain almost stationary within the next 24 hours embedded along the monsoon trough affecting Northern and Central Luzon. These weather systems are expected to bring scattered to widespread rains over the western section particularly over the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan and Zambales which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," it said in its 11 a.m. advisory. PAGASA said that as of 11 a.m., Onyok/Roke was estimated at 850 km northeast of Basco, Batanes, with maximum winds of 75 kph with gustiness of up to 90 kph. It advised residents along the areas to be affected to take all the necessary precautionary measures. Onyok entered Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Monday as a tropical depression, and moved slowly over Extreme Northern Luzon. But it changed course and moved out of the PAR Tuesday morning, although PAGASA did not discount the possibility of it re-entering the PAR. — LBG, GMA News
