PAGASA: 'Onyok' in PHL territory anew, intensifies slightly

After it re-entered Philippine territory Saturday night, Tropical Storm Onyok (Roke) intensified slightly and may remain "quasi-stationary," the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Sunday. PAGASA said Onyok was estimated at 880 km northeast of Basco, Batanes as of 2 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph. "The whole country will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms... with widespread rains over Northern and Central Luzon which may trigger flashfloods or landslides," it said in its 5 a.m. bulletin. PAGASA's 11 p.m. Saturday update indicated Onyok is forecast to be at 920 km northeast of Basco, Batanes or at 230 km east-southeast of Okinawa, Japan Sunday evening. It said that while Onyok is too far to affect directly any part of the country, it will enhance the southwest monsoon. Meanwhile, PAGASA's Sunday update said moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough. — LBG, GMA News
