No suspension of classes on Monday despite transport strike

There will be no suspension of classes in the elementary and high school levels amid the threat of a transport strike on Monday. According to the Department of Education, it received assurances from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority that there are enough personnel to maintain order. "There will be classes tomorrow, Sept. 19. MMDA assures us they have enough personnel to keep peace and order," it said on its Twitter account Sunday afternoon. DepEd has supervision over the preschool, elementary and high school levels. On Monday, militant transport groups are to lead a transport strike to protest the high prices of fuel. While the MMDA said it will "respect" the rights of the protesters to express their grievances, it said it will deal "accordingly" with those who resort to intimidation and violence. MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino earlier said special prosecutors will be in strategic places to file charges against those who try to resort to violence. — KBK, GMA News
