DOST: Another cyclone may enter PHL before end-Sept

Even as they track the path of potential typhoon "Pedring" (Nesat), state weather forecasters are tracking another potential cyclone that may enter Philippine territory before the end of September. Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr. on Monday hinted the potential cyclone may enter Philippine territory later this week. “Possible (ang Pedring ang huling bagyo sa Setyembre), basta huwag pumasok [sa] September 30 ang isa pa naming binabantayan (It is possible ‘Pedring’ will be the last cyclone to enter Philippine territory for September, but that is assuming a potential cyclone does not enter Philippine territory September 30)," Yumul said in an interview on dwIZ radio. He indicated that their present data shows the potential cyclone is still a low-pressure area at this time. But for now, Yumul said they are concentrating on tracking “Pedring," which is threatening parts of Luzon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, which monitors weather conditions, is under the supervision of the DOST. "Naka-concentrate tayo ngayon kay ‘Pedring,’ tine-threaten niya ang Northern Luzon (We are now concentrating on ‘Pedring,’ which is now threatening Northern Luzon)," he said. Earlier, Yumul said Tropical Storm Pedring may intensify into a typhoon within the day. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) defines a tropical storm as a moderate tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed of 64 to 118 kilometers per hour (25 to 75 mph). It defines a typhoon as an intense tropical cyclone with maximum wind speed exceeding 118 kph. — RSJ, GMA News
