October now Fil-Am history month in Illinois
October is now officially "Filipino-American History Month in Illinois" â particularly in Chicago - after Governor Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued separate proclamations. The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago said both proclamations recognized the great contribution of the Filipino-American community to the United States. "In both proclamations, the Governor and the Mayor recognized the great contribution of the Filipino-American community in the advancement of the United States in the fields of culture, arts, society, business, politics, education, economics, science, social service, technology, religion and many other areas," it said. The consulate said the United States Senate passed Senate Resolution (SR) 298 on October 1, 2009, and the US House of Representatives passed House Resolution (HR) 780 on November 2, 2009. Both resolutions recognized October as Filipino-American History Month in the country. With the development, the Consulate and the Filipino-American community in Chicago and suburban Illinois will celebrate the Filipino-American history month with several activities during the month. These include:
