DepEd suspends classes in NCR due to 'Pedring'

(Updated 10:19 p.m.) All classes from elementary to high school in Metro Manila on Tuesday have been suspended due to Typhoon Pedring, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced Monday. The suspension of classes followed the announcement of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in its 5 p.m. bulletin on Monday that 14 areas in the country— including Metro Manila — have been placed under Storm Signal No. 2 as 'Pedring' roared towards northern Luzon with wind speeds of up to 160 kph. Under DepEd guidelines, classes in all private and public schools from elementary to high school are automatically suspended when Signal No. 2 is raised over an area. A report on "24 Oras" said the DepEd announced the suspension of classes from preschool to high school in Metro Manila, which was placed under Signal No. 2 Monday afternoon.
The DepEd also tweeted that classes in Antipolo City will be suspended Tuesday, upon the orders of Mayor Danilo Leyble. "(In) Antipolo, Rizal: Classes will remain suspended in Kindergarten, Elementary and high school (on) Sept 27, as announced by City Mayor," it said in its Twitter account Monday evening. An updated Twitter message also said classes from kindergarten to elementary and high school are also suspended Tuesday in Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya and Cagayan. "Pedring" is expected to make landfall in the Isabela-Aurora area early Tuesday. DepEd reminded schools of the rules on "automatic suspension" of classes. "Automatic suspension of classes in Kindergarten for areas under signal no.1; Kindergarten, Elem & High School for signal no. 2," it said in its Twitter account Monday. —BC/YA/VS, GMA News
