Marikina River breaches 17 meters, Alarm Level 3

Several families living near the Marikina River fled their homes after water level in the river breached 17 meters due to rain spawned by Typhoon Pedring. In her report, GMA News' Maki Pulido quoted Marikina officials as saying they have already sounded Alarm Level 3 after water from the river started seeping inside homes located in Barangay Malanday. A separate report from Philippine National Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said at least 13 families from Malanday have been evacuated from their homes to the Pulilan gymnasium. The local government of Marikina earlier sounded a first alarm about 1:30 a.m. when the water level reached 15 meters. Authorities in Marikina City observe the following rules in sounding alarms:

  • Alarm Level 1: Water level from 15 to 16 meters;
  • Alarm Level 2: Water level above 16 to 17 meters;
  • Alarm Level 3: Water level beyond 17 meters. At Alarm Level 2, various officers of the Marikina City government are mobilized, including the Marikina Settlement Office, Parks Development Office, and "Rescue 161" - a unit under the Marikina City Mayor's Office. At 17 meters, residents are advised to voluntarily leave their homes. And at 18 meters, a forced evacuation is set in motion, according to local authorities. As of early Tuesday morning, no reported flooding in villages have been reported in the city, although the Marikina River Park, which lies along the river, have already been inundated, according to a separate report on Unang Balita. "Nung medyo tumila na naman di na siya tataas pero kapag malakas talaga ang ulan sa taas at malakas ang ulan sa Marikina,mabilis talaga siyang tataas," said a rescue official from Marikina, who was not identified in the report. — RSJ, GMA News
