'Pedring' moving away from PHL, some storm signals lowered


Typhoon Pedring (Nesat) is now over the West Philippine Sea, moving away from the country and may leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its latest bulletin. “Typhoon Nesat pounded the Philippines' main island on Tuesday, lashing crop-growing provinces and bringing the capital to a near standstill as it flooded roads, cut power supplies and closed financial markets, government offices, transport and schools," according to a report from Reuters. "Si 'Pedring' ay inaasahang tuloy-tuloy papalayo sa ating bansa at e-exit ng PAR by tomorrow afternoon, may gradual improvement of weather late Wednesday," PAGASA weather officer-in-charge Robert Sawi said in a media briefing. PAGASA said “Pedring" dumped 15 to 25 mm per hour of rainfall within is 650-km span. It added that "Pedring" may continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon and bring scattered to widespread rains over Southern Luzon and Visayas. In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the western sections of northern and central Luzon will experience stormy weather while the rest of northern and central Luzon will have rains with gusty winds. The coastal waters along these areas will be rough. The rest of Luzon and the western section of Visayas will experience moonsoon rains while the rest of the country will be mostly cloudy with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms, it added. "Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over the rest of the country with moderate to rough seas," it said. PAGASA said the typhoon maintained maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph after crossing northern Luzon. Storm signals lowered The alert level over Metro Manila was lower to from 2 to Storm Signal No. 1. Still under Storm Signal No. 3 are Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, and Pangasinan. PAGASA reminded residents in low-lying and mountainous areas with storm signals hoisted over them to stay alert against possible flash floods and landslides. Those living in coastal areas should be alert against big waves or storm surges. Strong to gale force winds may also affect the eastern seaboard of southern Luzon, the seaboards of Visayas and the western seaboard of Mindanao, it added. — With Earl Victor Rosero/VS, GMA News
