Fire hits Foxconn's Taiwan offices

A fire broke out at Foxconn Technology Group's Yantai complex in eastern China's Shandong province, Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported late Tuesday. Citing a Chinese blogger, the CNA noted Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. in Taiwan) is the world's largest contract electronics maker. Foxconn is a maker of consumer electronics, including those of Apple Inc. A spokesman for Foxconn said the blaze broke out around 10 a.m. and has been put out. No casualties were reported. The spokesperson also maintained factory's production capacity was not impacted. The CNA report cited the post that said the fire "broke out with a bang, and the smoke smells awful." It said smoke can be seen bellowing out from a dormitory in the photo. The CNA report quoted the spokesman as saying the fire started because of combustion in pipelines on the rooftop of a factory at the complex. Foxconn's complex is located at the Yantai economic technology development zone, and nearly 80,000 employees work there. The complex's total output ranks third among all eight development zones in China, after Shenzhen and Shanghai. It will eventually become the biggest production facility for consumer electronics on the Shandong peninsula, the CNA report said. — TJD, GMA News
