Lakers' Gasol sympathizes with 'Pedring' victims

Typhoon Pedring's (International name: Nesat) onslaught may be over in the Philippines, but the compassion of people both from and outside the country continue to pour in. NBA superstar Paul Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers joined the growing group of international celebrities who've expressed their sympathy for Pedring's victims. In a post on his official Facebook fan page, the Lakers' big man wrote: "I read with sadness the terrible consequences that the typhoon in Philippines is causing. I send all my support to the people that are suffering this great disaster." From Tuesday to Wednesday, the hashtag #PrayforthePhilippines was a Twitter trending topic both locally and worldwide. Gasol also extended his condolences to those who died on the onslaught of Pedring. "My sincere condolences to the families of the victims. I will be paying attention to the evolution of the situation in the next hours," said Gasol, a member of the Spanish national basketball team that won the 2011 FIBA European Basketball Championship. On Tuesday, Typhoon Pedring battered Luzon, causing 18 deaths and 13 injuries as of the latest count. As of 6 a.m. on Wednesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRMMC) said that the typhoon affected nearly 35,273 families (or 171,570 people) and damaged over P84,060,000 and P16,204,840.63 in infrastructure and agriculture, respectively. Meanwhile, another tropical storm is making its way to the Philippines. "Nalgae," to be named "Quiel" once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility, is expected to be felt in Luzon by Sunday, according to PAGASA. — Bea Cupin/JVP, GMA News
