DOST: Use next 3 days of 'calm' before storm to repair homes

Residents affected by Typhoon Pedring (Nesat) can use the next three days to repair their homes as tropical storm "Quiel," which entered Philippine territory early Thursday, is not expected to affect the country until Sunday. The advice came from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), which said the weather will improve, with only rain showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. "From Thursday to Saturday, if there are home repairs that you need to do, do so while the weather is relatively calm," DOST Undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr. said in an interview on dzBB radio. He also said repair work in hospitals and evacuation centers that serve people affected by cyclones will have to be rushed. "Ang hospitals at evacuation centers na nasalanta, no questions asked, ang tatlong araw ay dapat gamitin sa pagkumpuni sa mga ito para magamit agad kung kailangan," he said. But he said massive restoration or repair work for other facilities that may take a long time may have to be postponed for now, adding storm Quiel may affect the country starting Sunday. Yumul said state weather forecasters expect Quiel to follow Pedring's path, hitting several areas in Northern Luzon. "Large-scale repair work will have to wait. It is hard to rehabilitate or repair a facility that may be damaged heavily again by Quiel," he said. He suggested that these repairs be done when there is a one- to two-week break from cyclones. — LBG, GMA News
