Classes in Navotas, other parts of NCR still suspended

Classes in public schools in Navotas City, both in the elementary and high school levels, remain suspended until Friday because of the damage brought about by typhoon "Pedring" (international name: Nesat). A report on dzBB radio on Thursday said classes in public elementary schools in some villages in Valenzuela City and Malabon City were also suspended. In Malabon City, the elementary schools affected are those in Malabon, Santolan, Dampalit, Panghulo, Tonsuya and Concepcion Elementary Schools, and Taniong Integrated School. Navotas under state of calamity Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco said classes in the city's public elementary and high schools remain suspended until Friday because Navotas is under a state of calamity due to the damage it sustained from the typhoon. "Wala kaming pasok sa lahat na public schools, elementary at high school, hanggang bukas," he said in an interview on dwIZ radio. Tiangco said one resident died at the height of "Pedring" and eight villages near the bayside area suffered heavy damage. Some 1,700 families have been brought to 15 evacuation centers, he added. Classes in other areas resume Meanwhile, regular classes in all levels resumed on Thursday except in areas that are still flooded, education officials said. In separate announcements, the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said it is up to local government units to suspend classes in their areas. The DepEd supervises preschool, kindergarten, elementary and high schools while CHED oversees tertiary level schools. Classes in several levels had been suspended in many areas Tuesday due to the bad weather conditions caused by Typhoon “Pedring," which exited Philippine territory on Wednesday afternoon. - VVP, GMA News
