Typhoon Quiel's eye nears Isabela town; zero visibility noted


Zero visibility threatened to veil some areas in Isabela province as the eye of Typhoon Quiel (Nalgae) approached a coastal town there before 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Powerful winds were felt along Maharlika Highway and threatened to uproot trees there, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) tweeted the eye of Quiel was approaching Dinapigue town in Isabela as of 8:30 a.m. PAGASA earlier estimated Quiel would make landfall in the Isabela-Aurora area between 8 and 10 a.m. Power cut off Power was cut off in Isabela and Aurora provinces early Saturday, before Quiel threatened to make landfall on the area. In Isabela, the provincial government said this was a precaution to protect residents. In Aurora province, provincial administrator Alex Ocampo said power was out in several parts of Aurora early Saturday. "Walang kuryente ang buong lalawigan ng Aurora," he added in an interview on dzBB. He added communications systems were down in parts of the province. At least 40 families or 131 people in the coastal towns of Maconacon and Divilacan have so far been evacuated to safer grounds as of 6 a.m. The dzBB report said the provincial government also deployed teams with chainsaws to clear roads of fallen trees. — LBG, GMA News
