Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton successfully defended her World Boxing Organization (WBO) female super bantamweight crown opposite Mexican opponent Jessica Villafranca on Friday (Saturday in Manila) at the Polifuncional Sports Complex in Yucatan, Mexico. Julaton, 31, used her veteran smarts in winning by unanimous decision over the 18-year-old Villafranca. All three judges saw the fight in Julaton's favor as the San Francisco-born fighter outpointed Villafranca—98-91, 96-93 and 97-92. Despite suffering a cut on her forehead after both fighters' heads accidentally collided, Julaton was the clear winner as she came out the aggressor and picked apart her younger foe in the early rounds. Julaton, who is also being trained by World Boxing Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, retained the 122-pound title belt she won last year against Maria Elena Villalobos. She hiked her ring record to 10 wins (one by knockout), two losses and one draw. It was also Julaton's third straight win after suffering a unanimous decision loss to Lisa Brown last year. Villafranca dropped to a 12-4-0 win-loss-draw record with six of her wins coming by way of knockout. GMA 7's latest installment of the Laban ng Lahi boxing series—Bagyo sa Mexico—will be aired on GMA-7 at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 2. — JVP/HS, GMA News
