Alas' heroic effort earns him NCAA weekly honors

Kevin Alas, struggling with his shooting the entire game, made the basket that mattered most in helping Letran snap San Sebastian's 15-game winning streak last Friday to be the hands down choice for the ACCEL/3XVI NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week. Alas buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 22.9 seconds as the Knights hammered out a nerve-wracking 82-81 overtime victory over Stags to remain in contention for a twice-to-beat berth in the Final Four. The veteran playmaker delivered another splendid all-around performance with 22 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and four steals as the Knights improved to 13-3 for third place. Before edging San Sebastian, Letran suffered a 68-53 setback against also-ran University of Perpetual Help System Dalta last Monday. "I told my teammates that we are over eager (against the Altas). We need to play with maturity and I'm glad they stepped up," said Alas, who was able to elude the defense set up by Stags forward Ronald Pascual to bang in the marginal basket. The Letran skipper is averaging 17.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.1 steals this season. Alas edged teammate Raymond Almazan, San Beda's Garvo Lanete, Arellano's Adrian Celada and Jet Vidal of Perpetual Help for the weekly plum. — JVP, GMA News
