NDRRMC: 62 bridges, roads impassable due to 'Pedring'


At least 62 bridge and road sections remained impassable nearly a week after Typhoon Pedring (Nesat) lashed Luzon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Sunday. In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC also said the damage to property caused by Pedring so far has risen to P6.690 billion. The NDRRMC said the roads and bridges that are still impassable are:

    - two in Ilocos - 18 in Cagayan Valley - 21 in Central Luzon - 21 in Cordillera
It added Pedring has so far affected 511,795 families or 2,418,976 people in 2,976 villages in 289 towns and 41 cities in 34 provinces. Of these, 35,242 families or 162,084 people are being served in 444 evacuation centers. The death toll as of Sunday remained at 52, while 63 were injured and 30 still missing. Damage to property was estimated at P6,690,145,454.43, including P1,041,670,857.81 in infrastructure and P5,648,474,596.62 in agriculture. At least 5,761 houses were destroyed while 34,534 were damaged. Schools as evacuation centers As of 7 p.m. Saturday, the Department of Education said 76 schools are being used as evacuation centers. These include:
    - 13 in Metro Manila - three in Cordillera - five in Ilocos - eight in Cagayan Valley - five in Central Luzon - five in Southern Luzon - 37 in Bicol Region
These schools are accommodating 3,484 families or 8,354 people, it said. Typhoon Quiel Meanwhile, Typhoon Quiel (Nalgae) that hit northern Luzon Saturday morning has weakened and slowed slightly and it is expected to exit Philippine territory Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Sunday morning. But the typhoon left at least one person dead while another was injured in a landslide in Mountain Province, the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Cordillera said Saturday evening. OCD-Cordillera head Olive Luces cited initial information indicating the incident occurred along Halsema Highway. — LBG, GMA News
