Palace: No need for PNoy to be visible in relief ops

There is no need for President Benigno Aquino III to be visible in relief operations for victims of recent typhoons Pedring (Nesat) and Quiel (Nalgae), Malacañang said Sunday. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte brushed aside claims by Aquino's critics that he was nowhere to be seen when Pedring and Quiel lashed several areas in Luzon. "The president's concern for the victims is not measured in his visibility in photo opportunities. Remember that when he was in Japan, he excused himself so he could monitor developments of an ongoing typhoon," she said on government-run dzRB radio. Valte made the claim hours before Aquino was to attend a meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Camp Aguinaldo. The NDRRMC was to hold a meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday to assess the effects of Pedring and Quiel. Also, Valte said Aquino is not making himself too visible because he does not want to distract ongoing relief work. "Ayaw niya [Aquino] na siya ang magiging focus at di ang biktima. Ang punto niya siguraduhin nating nakakatulong tayo," she said. — LBG, GMA News
