'Pedring' death toll up to 66, nearly 3M people affected – NDRRMC


The death toll from typhoon "Pedring" (international code: Nesat) rose to 66 Tuesday evening, while the number of people affected by the cyclone neared three million, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. In its 6 p.m. update, the NDRRMC said 66 bridges and road sections remained impassable, including 31 in Cagayan Valley and 11 in Cordillera. Among the recent fatalities were:

  • Simon Santos, 54, Hagonoy, Bulacan (drowning)
  • Luzviminda Legaspi, 56, Hagonoy, Bulacan (drowning)
  • Richard Salcedo, 21, Paombong, Bulacan (drowning)
  • Fred Tolentino, 32, Calumpit, Bulacan (drowning)
  • Edwin Mira Nungay, 32, Malolos, Bulacan (drowning)
  • Kenneth Bernardo, 22, Malolos, Bulacan (electrocution)
  • Romeo Valmadrid, 47, Talavera, Nueva Ecija (drowning)
  • Willy Mayoyo, 20, San Simon, Pampanga (drowning)
  • Eduardo Vendevil, 36, San Antonio, Zambales (drowning)
  • Kryster Delle de Jesus Bitangkol, 3, San Antonio, Zambales (drowning)
Also, at least 65 people were injured while 28 were reported missing. "Pedring" has so far affected 610,742 families or 2,841,419 people in 3,316 villages in 302 towns and 41 cities in 34 provinces, the disaster council said. Of these, 46,495 families or 210,242 people are being served inside 499 evacuation centers. Damage to property was estimated at P8,898,950,081, including P1,344,198,382.81 in infrastructure and P7,554,751,698.19 in agriculture At least 6,298 houses were destroyed while 37,774 were damaged. The Department of Education said 315 school buildings were damaged, with the cost estimated at P146.7 million. On the other hand, the 66 bridges and road sections that were damaged included six in Ilocos, 31 in Cagayan Valley, 18 in Central Luzon and 11 in Cordillera. — VS, GMA News
