Android Ice Cream Sandwich to launch next week?

Ice Cream Sandwich, the upcoming latest flavor of Google's Android operating system for smartphones and mobile devices, may make its debut on October 11, a tech site reported Friday (Manila time). CNET reported Google may unveil Ice Cream Sandwich at the Samsung Unpacked event in San Diego. Android runs a wide range of Samsung devices. The CNET report cited a placeholder video titled "Android ICS Launch" on the Android Developers' YouTube channel, with a message counting down the time on when the live event will begin. But as of 10am Friday (in Manila), the placeholder message was replaced with a different message that reads "This live event is no longer available. Sorry about that." Still, CNET said Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt had said last month the next flavor of Android may debut October or November. At the October 11 event, it said Samsung may use the event to unveil a new Android phone. CNET speculated Samsung may introduce the Nexus Prime, likely to be the first Ice Cream Sandwich phone. It noted Samsung has posted a teaser video that includes the words "Something big is coming", which it said could be an indication of the phone's screen size. First attempt at unified Android? CNET said Ice Cream Sandwich is Google's first try at making a unified mobile OS for both smartphones and tablets. It said ICS developers will get new open-source APIs and a framework that will help them optimize their apps to run on a variety of Android phones and tablets. — TJD, GMA News
