Mozilla postpones Firefox 3.6 update plan

Mozilla has set aside its plan to prompt users of its "ancient" Firefox 3.6.x browser to the latest version 7, at least for now. Firefox release manager Christian Legnitto said they want to first make sure their server capacity can handle the release of the new version. "The previously scheduled 3.6 → 7.0.1 advertised update is now postponed while we make sure our server capacity is sufficient for release. Once the investigation is complete I will communicate a new date well in advance so all stakeholders can plan accordingly," he said in a blog post. A separate blog post by Mozilla's quality team cited problems with Firefox's Sync for desktop and mobile. It said the Sync server is having "intermittent problems due to service overload". Firefox Sync is a new Firefox service to keep bookmarks, passwords, tabs, and other settings in step across multiple versions of the browser. Tech site CNET said Mozilla had planned a forced update of sorts, where users of Firefox 3.6 would be prompted to get the latest version. CNET noted Firefox 3.6 was the second most widely used version of the browser in September, and Mozilla expects the upgrade prompt to encourage many to make the move. On the other hand, Firefox 7 is one of the new series of rapid-release versions of the browser, with smaller updates coming every six weeks. — TJD, GMA News
