DA: Rice supply for 2011 sufficient despite typhoons Pedring, Quiel

Despite the devastation brought about by typhoons "Pedring" (Nesat) and "Quiel" (Nalgae), the Department of Agriculture (DA) reassured the public on Monday that the country's supply of rice is sufficient until the end of the year. Agriculture Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup said data show that the country's rice supply buffer is good for at least 75 days. The buffer includes the stocks of:

  • NFA: 30 days
  • private sector: 32 days
  • households: 80 to 85 days "Wala tayong kabahala sa basic staple, ang bigas available yan sa report ni NFA Administrator Lito Banayo kay Sec. Alcala last week, we are in the 75- to 80-day level," Salacup said in an interview on dwIZ radio. Salacup explained that the DA factored in weather disturbances in computing its rice production requirements at the beginning of the year. "So wala tayong ikabahala diyan till end of the year," he said. 2012 projection Salacup said the DA will have to assess the damage brought by the two typhoons to determine how much buffer the country will have at the start of 2012. He said the DA will have to assess the damage to crops and determine which ones are still recoverable. "For next year ia-assess natin yan ano ang karapat-dapat na suporta sa basic staple requirement which is rice," he said. - VVP, GMA News
