MMDA starts info drive about motorcycle lanes in NCR

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) began on Monday an information drive about the motorcycle lanes along Commonwealth and Macapagal avenues in the National Capital Region (NCR). The full implementation of the motorcycle lanes policy will begin on October 17, the MMDA said. In an interview over radio dzBB, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said, "Nagkakaroon na ng information campaign, pinapaalam natin na may pulyetas sa motorcycle drivers. Sa (October 17th) ang full implementation na." He noted that many motorcycle drivers were still not using the designated motorcycle roads as of Monday. The MMDA put up road signs indicating "Motorsiklo" to distinguish the motorcycle lanes on the following locations:

  • fourth lane along Commonwealth Avenue, and
  • right-most lane along Macapagal Avenue. Tolentino said the MMDA personnel will not yet apprehend the motorcycle drivers who are not using the motorcycle lanes. "May tolerance tayo, siguro tatlong araw ang tolerance di pa ganoon dahil naninibago pa driver ng motorcycle," he said. He also reminded motorcycles drivers that they are covered by the 60-kilometer per hour (kph) speed limit imposed along Commonwealth and Macapagal avenues. According to the MMDA's Road Safety Unit, motorcycles accounted for the highest accident rate in the first six months of 2010: 329 (or 32.97 percent) of all accidents recorded during the period. Cars with 201 (or 21.05 percent) accidents recorded so far during the same period. - VVP, GMA News
