Pinoy killed in UAE road accident

A Filipino and an Indian were killed after figuring in a road accident in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday morning, a report of Gulf News said. The report said both victims were aboard a pick-up truck when a water tanker suddenly swerved to their side of the road and hit them head on along Business Bay Bridge toward Deira in UAE at about 8:45 a.m. on Sunday. Chief Traffic Prosecutor Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution (TPP) told Gulf News that the 23-year-old Pakistani driver of the water tanker was detained for reckless and inattentive driving and causing the deaths of the two victims. The driver suffered minor injuries. According to Gulf News, Sunday's accident came amid Dubai Police's plan to reduce traffic-related deaths to zero for every 100,000 residents by 2020. The plan has resulted in a drop in the number of road accident victims from 21.7 per 100,000 residents in 2007 to 4.5 per 100,000 in 2010, the report said. The UAE now ranks fifth among the most advanced cities in the world with the lowest number of road deaths. - VVP, GMA News
